Cob coins were effectively the first coins minted in the Americas by the Spanish conquering authorities. These coins were issued by various mints for more than 200 years starting in 1536 when the Mexico City mint issued its first coins. Rather than rolling out a bar of silver into a sheet of a specific thickness that could then be cut into smooth round planchets which would be stamped into coins, a faster method was employed. A bar of silver was simply cut into chunks of the appropriate weight. These small sliver clumps were then treated as if they were finished planchets and were hammer struck between crude dies. The word "cob" is derived from the Spanish word "cabo" meaning "the end" that is, the sliver of silver cut from the end of the silver bar.
